Illinois’s Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA) lists voiceprints as biometric identifiers. A business that collects one needs written notice and a signed release first, and a person whose rights are violated can sue for $1,000 per negligent violation or $5,000 per intentional or reckless one. An August 2024 amendment limited repeated collection from the same person to one violation, but the exposure across many callers is still large.
Most AI call answering does not need voiceprints at all. Transcribing what a caller says, booking an appointment or routing a call is different from identifying someone by the sound of their voice. We choose AI voice configurations that transcribe without speaker identification, avoid voice-cloning features that use customer audio, and document the setup so your counsel can review it.

Not by itself. BIPA regulates voiceprints and other biometric identifiers. An AI receptionist that transcribes and books calls without identifying people by their voice does not create one. We configure systems that way and avoid voice-biometric features.
